My cocoon tightens, colors tease,

I’m feeling for the air;

A dim capacity for wings

Degrades the dress I wear.

A power of butterfly must be

The aptitude to fly,

Meadows of majesty concedes

And easy sweeps of sky.

So I must baffle at the hint

and cipher at the sign,

And Make much blunder, if at last

I take the clew divine.

-Emily Dickinson

Darling friends and family,

Welcome to my blog! Here is where I will document my next six months of adventures. On August 4th, 2011, I’m setting off for Johannesburg, South Africa, where I will be living and working at Malaika Orphanage Center for six weeks. There I will officially be starting a baking and health class for the kids (I swear they can go together if you want them to!), and unofficially spending some good quality time loving on munchkins and learning patience, kindness, and a different view of the world. After that, I have to enroll back in real school—and I’m going to be studying abroad in Fife, Scotland, at the University of St. Andrews. Hopefully I’ll have the time to travel Europe a little while I’m there. And so this is a way for me to keep in touch will all of you—and share pictures and love from afar! Miss Dickinson, whose beautiful poem inspired my blog name, also once refered to her work as her “letter to the world that never wrote” her. But I’m telling of you here and now that I HAD BETTER BE HEARING FROM YOU!! Email or skype me anytime, puh-leasehearing from y’all will be such a comfort. Thank you so much for taking the time to read this far—I hope I have blog-worthy stories for you in the future!

Love,

Rachel Marie
